Highlands offers a wide array of things to do while youre here (Of course, many folks come here to do nothing and thats all right too). The climate in Highlands is cooler because of our high elevation (average town limits elevation is 4118 ft), d the large amount of rainfall we receive each year (usually between 70-90 inches), and the amount of forest lands that surround us. We are in the Nantahala National Forest which is surrounded by The Chattahoochee, Cherokee, Great Smoky Mountain, and Pisgah National Forest. Our mountains are some of the oldest in the world, and having the Forest lands so near makes it easy for hiking, backpacking, or driving through to see its beauty. We are close to the Appalachian Trail, and The Blue Ridge Parkway. Other attractionswithin a 2 to 4 hour drive are: Great Smoky Mountain Railway, Cherokee Indian Reservation, Harrahs Casino, Biltmore House & Gardens, Sliding Rock, Trail of Tears Outdoor Drama, Dollywood, Skiing, Hot Springs, Park Seed Co. and Trial Gardens, Santa Land, Carrowinds, Six Flags over Georgia, and the list goes on and on. Let Highlands be your destination- the others are just side trips. More locally: Golf at one of the close by public golf courses- all within 45 minutes of town. Tennis anyone? There are public and private tennis courts sprinkled around town. Shopping- The Shopping experience in Highlands if hard to match. We have upscale clothing stores ( cashmere and furs) down to Tee shirt shops and everything in between. Shopping for outdoor gear for hiking, or fishing? We have those, and guides for hire to help you along your way as well. As for the cultural scene, we have a local community theatre that boast some of the best entertainment in the Smoky Mountains! There are also performances of all kinds at our new Performing Arts Center, and the art works on display at our local galleries are second to none. Shopping for antiques? Highlands has some of the best antique stores in the Blue Ridge Mountain region. Why, you could plan a cosmetic or reconstructive surgery around a vacation, and stay in one of our fine rental homes. We love our town, and want you to love it too. We dont have any of the chain restaurants or shopping malls or outlet stores- but all are within a 30 minute to 2 hour drive- so we dont need them here. Highlands and the surrounding areas are known for their beauty and tranquility. Were also known as The Land of Waterfalls just some of our local waterfalls are:Dry Falls- a 70- 80 foot waterfall that you can walk under without getting wet! (well, almost), Glen Falls This waterfall has 3 cascades of 60-65 feet each visible by a steep mountain trail- cool anytime of the year! Lower Cullasaja Falls- this waterfall drops 250 feet and is visible by our scenic Highway 64- not good for white knuckle drivers. Whitewater Falls has a 411 foot drop and is known as the King of all Southeastern Waterfalls its located about 45 minutes from Highlands- but worth the trip, Highland best vacation rentals.
